“Macellum” was the name given to the main market area by the “Forum”; by it there were sold meat and fish.
At the centre of the building, by a twelve-angled space, there was a tub filled with salted water inside which there were live fish.
By the estreme end of the large market area there is a Temple dedicated to the cult of the Emperor’s “genius”, a benevolent “genie”, a portrait of which one generally found by street junctions, in the act of protecting all passers-by.
